Angelina Jolie was born in Los Angeles to actor John Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Her parents separated a year later and her father had very little to do with her and her brother throughout their childhood. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Bill Day. Jolie continues to not have a relationship with her father.

As a teen, Jolie was known for wild antics and for having suicidal tendencies. She often wore black, changed her hair constantly, and aspired to be a funeral home director. During this time she also dabbled in modeling and acting, starring in various low budget and student films. It was also during this time that she appeared in the cult classic, Hackers. The film was also where she met her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller.

Jolie's big break came in 1998 when she starred in the title role of the film, Gia. She portrayed the supermodel Gia Carangi, who died very early in life from AIDS. For her portrayal, she won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Despite her recognition with Gia and Hackers, Angelina did not receive international success until 2001 when she starred in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The film was based of the character Lara Croft from the video game franchise. After appearing in Tomb Raider, Angelina has seen huge success and has appeared in many box office hits.

Jolie has since made herself known through her immense amount of humanitarian work and her high profile relationship with fellow actor Brad Pitt. Since her big break, she has also become a mother of 6 children, written and directed her own film, and has traveled the world in an attempt to help people less fortunate.
