Born in London, Sophia was raised by a vicar and his wife, along with her younger brother Oliver. She grew up primarily in London and attended school there.

Sophia had intentions of attending Cambridge and pursuing studies in Philosophy. However, upon being spotted in a school play by screenwriter Julian Fellowes, she decided to pursue a career in acting instead.

She performed in many films and television shows, first in England, then later in the States. However, Sophia's big break didn't occur until 2006 when she was cast in the film Tristan + Isolde. Sophia starred as Isolde, alongside American actor James Franco, who played the role of Tristan. This film was her huge break into the American film industry.

She has since made appearances in other television and film pieces. In 2006 she made an appearance in an episode of BBC's Doctor Who alongside her then boyfriend, David Tennant. The episode was titled "Madame de Pompedour", in which she played the titled character.
