Animal Spirit Guides: The Raven

Introduction to the Raven

The raven is a bird surrounded by lore and mythology. Often times looked down upon or considered "unclean", they are honored in Norse Paganism. The Norse god Odin is said to shapeshift into a raven and was known for having two raven companions.

Ravens share a lot of qualities and characteristics similar to that of the crow. The only real noticeable difference between the two birds is their size. Anyone interested in ravens should take it upon themselves to study crows as well, in order to gain more knowledge about the raven.

Known for being tricksters and mimickers, ravens can impersonate and mimic the sounds of almost any other animal or insect they encounter. Once they hear a sound, they are known for squawking it where they go until they encounter a new sound that they wish to mimic.

Raven Spirit Guide Meaning

The raven is known for mimicking other sounds. The raven spirit teaches us to be good listeners. Listen to the people around you and the people you care about; learn from your surrounding by listening.

Raven spirit is a great spirit guide for teachers or people who spend their lives instructing others. This is due to the ravens talent of mimicking sounds it hears, thereby "instructing" others in what it knows.

The raven spirit has a strong association with magic and magicians. Anyone who encounters the raven spirit are probably in need of some magic in their life. People with the raven totem are usually people with a natural ability to use magic and understand it.

People with deep inner secrets can benefit from the raven as a spirit guide. The raven spirit helps us to look deep within ourselves and bring out the darkness. They then teach us to transform that darkness into light. Anyone struggling with a dark past will probably benefit from this transformation.

The raven spirit guide is rarely chosen, but rather it chooses whom it wills to guide. If the raven spirit comes to you, do not ignore it. This is a great privilege since the raven only appears to those it wants to. Listen to what the raven spirit has to teach you and learn from this great spirit guide.

An interesting subject the Raven. Poe must have been inspired by this mimicker. His words so profound, his soul shared in his verse. The Raven is a bird of magic indeed. I am so moved as I am by the wolf. Mystical a delight once crossing their path, I have followed their flight. I write on their wing, their paths left in the earth. I delight in their mystery, they are man's mystery.

I loved reading about the Raven. I also read the one you did about the wolf and you said the Raven is connected to the wolf, I think I need to check this out.

I remember praying for a white Raven. (Inigok Kupiktac) It took 6 months, but I really did see one. Then I felt so bad for it. It was shunned by the rest of the ravens... I really try to not pray for anything, unless it's necessary... nice hub! lily

That's amazing Lily! I've never seen a white raven nor even heard of one. That's pretty amazing. And yes, we should try to never pray for anything that isn't necessary. Blessed be!

I have been trying to learn more about power animals, totems and ravens in particular for a while now but the tricky information is how to determine for certain is whether or not an animal is one's totem/power animal or not. I've only recently discovered that ravens have seemed to be following me around for years (not literally but figuratively) I have often used the name "Raven" as a nickname and snow-raven was what a character's name evolved into. This character has been around for so long she's become more of an alter-ego of mine on-line. I use her name for pretty much everything now. All of my NWP jewelry has raven's design on them and the stories of raven have always resonated with me more than any other. I have also see wild ravens 3 times at least but I live in an area where these birds are shyer. Crows seem more common than ravens. One is more likely to hear a raven than actually see them. All information I've read on ravens as a totem/power animal has resonated for me more than any other...and when I began to doubt I glanced at a friend's sketch she was working on and lo! it was a raven. Strange? I thought so. Still...is any of this definitive? I don't know. Does any one know a way to determine it for certain? I know meditation is supposed to work but I worry that if I tried that I'd see a raven because I expected to. Any one have any suggestions?

Sounds to me like you're off to a very good start. Seeing the raven and envisioning it often is a very good sign that the raven is indeed your power animal. I highly suggest using meditation to confirm your theory. If you clear your mind completely, like you should with meditation, you shouldn't see a raven simply because you're expecting to.

I have been encountering a raven sometimes there will be two hovering over me or my car everyday sometimes multiple times in different areas. At first I though it was just a coincidence and was intrigued by this daily occurrence. I've been doing research on my spirit guide and the like. I am so fascinated by this revelation. That we can also have an animal spirit guide. I looked up my Indian zodiac sign and its the raven. I'm going to do some meditation on this and see what I'm told. Thanks for the information! Great site!
